The purpose of this test is to investigate the dimensions of your heart, to analyze how well your heart is functioning or pumping, and to analyze the form and composition of the heart valves. A 2-D (or two-dimensional) echocardiogram can display a cross-section "slice" of the heartbeat, such as the chambers, valves, and large blood vessels that move the left and right ventricles. The Doppler echocardiogram evaluates the speed and direction of blood flow in the heart. The four valves are screened for leaks and other deformities. By allocating color to the direction of blood flow (Color Flow Tracking), vast tracts of blood flow can be analyzed. These color flow mappings permit the cardiologist to perceive abnormal blood flow attributes.
